Strumpshaw Fen: RSPB Reserve

Managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Strumpshaw Fen is located on the banks of the River Yare, around six miles from Norwich. Part of the Mid-Yare National Nature Reserve, the area is incredibly important to the local environment and offers an essential habitat for native and visiting species of birds.

Walking through the reserve is the perfect way to get close to nature and learn a little more about the flora and fauna of the local area.

Routes

There are three routes laid out inside the Strumpshaw Fen RSPB Reserve: the Fen Trail, the Woodland Trail and the Meadow Trail. Ranging in length from 1.2km to 3.8km, the choice of trails ensures there’s a route to keep everyone happy.

The Fen Trail: this is the longest of the three on offer at Strumpshaw. Like the other two routes, it begins in the reserve’s car park. It then meanders through meadows and reed beds to the banks of the River Yare. The route then takes you along the edge of the waterway and through the marshy landscape before crossing the railway line and returning you to the car park. Altogether the route is 3.8km long and should take around 1.5 hours to complete.

The Woodland Trail: this picturesque trail takes you through pristine woodland and along the banks of the River Yare. Listen for woodpeckers drumming away in the trees and warblers singing by the water’s edge. Follow this trail in the spring months and you’ll be able to enjoy the spectacular bluebells in all their glory. The Woodland Trail is 2.4km long and should take around an hour to complete.

The Meadow Trail: the shortest of the three routes, the Meadow Trail is just 1.2km long and can be completed in around 30 minutes. This makes it the perfect choice for visitors with young children and those just looking for a short afternoon stroll. The Meadow Trail is open in spring and summer only.

Difficulty

With so many trails to choose from, finding a route that suits your energy levels and your ability should be easy. During the winter months, some routes can become water logged so may not be suitable for those with mobility problems.

Facilities

You’ll find a car park and a toilet at Strumpshaw Fen. There’s also an information centre close to the car park where you can find out all about the local area. The reserve is easily accessible by car and Buckenham train station is just a couple of miles down the road.
