Salhouse Broad
Situated just off the River Bure, Salhouse Broad attracts little through traffic and so makes a great place to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the region. The Broad is sandwiched between Hoveton Great Broad and the village of Salhouse, giving you a great choice of amenities and places to visit in the local area.
One of the best ways to see the Broad is by foot. There are a number of walking routes around the waterway, offering a variety of options for you to choose from.
Route
One of the most popular walks in the area takes you around the pretty Salhouse village as well as the nearby waterway. Located just to the south of the Broad, the village is home to a welcoming, dog-friendly pub, a few shops and the main car park serving the nearby Broad.
If you want to explore the village before setting off for the Broad, park in the car park and then turn right down Salhouse Broad, heading towards Wroxham. The road will eventually turn into Upper Street and then Vicarage Road. Just before you reach Vicarage Farm, take the footpath on your left and follow it through the fields towards Salhouse. When you reach Lower Street, turn left and head back towards the car park.
From the car park, the short route to the Broad is clearly signposted. Follow the path through the woods until you reach the edge of the water. If you’re travelling to the area by boat, you can moor up in Salhouse Broad and begin your walk from there.
Difficulty
Altogether the route is around three miles long. Although it’s largely flat, you will have to navigate a few gates and stiles along the way, so the walk may not be suitable for those with mobility problems.
Amenities
Although you won’t find a lot of amenities in the immediate area, there are a couple of pubs and shops where you can stop for supplies en route. In Salhouse itself, you’ll find The Bell Inn, while just a few hundred metres from the car park is The Fur and Feather. Both of these pubs serve a good selection of drinks as well as light meals and snacks. Stop to re-fuel after your walk around the Broads and enjoy some authentic Norfolk hospitality.
