Oulton Marshes
The marshy area around Oulton Broad is incredibly important for the region’s wildlife. Home to a wide array of birds, insects and other creatures, this wild and beautiful region helps to protect the local environment and preserve the habitat for future generations.
If you’re staying in the nearby area, or visiting Oulton Broad for the day, walking through the marshes, fields and woodland that make up the landscape is a fantastic way to get to know the region that little bit better.
Route
There are a number of footpaths crisscrossing the area, giving you a great selection of routes to choose from. If you’re looking for a circular walk with good public transport links, one of the best options is the Oulton Broad North route. The walk begins and ends at Oulton Broad North Station, making it easy to access for those travelling without a car.
From the station, turn left down Bridge Road. You’ll eventually reach the A146. Go past a car park and then turn right down Marsh Road. At the fork in the road, bear left to walk between the station car park and the holiday chalets. This will lead you down towards Oulton Broad itself where you’ll begin to see signs for the Angles Way.
Follow signs for the Suffolk Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre at Carlton Marshes. You’ll then follow the footpath through the marshes and across a number of fields and meadows before finding yourself back in the car park for Carlton Marshes. Return to Oulton Broad North Station via the same route or hug the banks of the Broad for great views of the watery landscape.
Difficulty
Although much of the route is on roads and other hard surfaces, you will have to navigate a number of gates and stiles so it may not be suitable for people with mobility problems. Altogether, the route is around five miles in length.
Facilities
There are a number of pubs, shops and restaurants in and around Oulton Broad. Fuel-up at The Crown before you head out onto the marshes or stop by The Waveney Pub for a well-earned drink on your way back to the station. The area around Oulton Broad North station is also home to a great choice of fish and chip shops and a number of convenience stores where you can stock up on supplies.
Points of interest
The Broad and the marshland are the two most interesting sights on the route. These unique landscapes are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, giving you the chance to see a beautiful slice of the local landscape. If you’re a keen birdwatcher, make sure you pack a pair of binoculars so you can spot the flocks that that live on the water throughout the year.
