Barton Broad Board Walk
Walking through the Norfolk Broads gives you the perfect opportunity to see more of the area’s natural beauty, spot its unique wildlife and enjoy some fresh East Anglian air. Both short, circular routes and long distance paths are available across the broads, each offering their only unique views of the landscape.
One of the best short walks in the area is the Barton Broad Board Walk. Set on the banks of the second largest of the Norfolk Broads, the walk takes you deep into the unique landscape and offers fantastic views of the waterway.
Route
You can find the start of the Barton Broad Board Walk by heading to Neatishead and then following the signpost for ‘Boardwalk’. You’ll find a car park and toilets on Long Road, close to the junction with Irstead Road. From the car park, the path to the beginning of the boardwalk is clearly signposted so finding your way there should be easy. A car park for disabled visitors is located right next to the path itself.
The boardwalk is an elevated route that takes you across the marshy waters of Barton Broad. Along the way, you’ll pass through dense woodland and along the banks of the broad. At one point, you suddenly emerge from the trees onto a raised viewing platform. Here you’ll be able to spot many of broad’s wild inhabitants and enjoy wonderful views over the water.
Dogs are not allowed on the Barton Broad Board Walk so make sure you leave your four-legged friend at home.
Difficulty
The Barton Broad Board Walk is just 1.5 miles long and the entire route is wheelchair friendly. There are also a number of resting places on the way where you can stop to catch your breath and enjoy the wonderful scenery. The walk is almost completely flat so should be suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
Facilities
There are toilets in the nearby car park and picnic tables are dotted along the route. If you need to stock up on supplies, or if you want to warm up with a well-earned drink, head to the nearby village of Neatishead where you’ll find a small shop and a welcoming local pub. More pubs are located a few miles to the south of Barton Broad. Both The Swan Inn and The Ferry Inn sit on the banks of the River Bure in Horning.
Points of interest
The main point of interest on this short walk is the viewing platform that looks out over Barton Broad. Located about hallway along the route, if offers wonderful views of the water and offers glimpses of the many birds, insects and other creatures that inhabit this unique habitat.
